A stump grinder is a machine with a spinning wheel of carbide teeth. The wheel is worked across the stump in passes, chipping the wood away a layer at a time, until what is left sits below the surrounding grade.
What it leaves behind is a mix of wood chips and soil, called grindings, in and around the hole where the stump was. Grinding follows the stump down and out into the root flare you can see. It is not a full root excavation, and nobody can honestly promise that every root under a yard is gone.
This is the only service offered. Not tree removal, trimming, land clearing, hauling, or planting. If the tree is still standing, it has to come down first, and that is somebody else’s job.

What details help most with a quote?
Four things carry most of it: how many stumps, roughly how wide each one is across the top, the property ZIP code, and how a machine gets to them. A couple of photos taken from a few feet back tell the story faster than anything written down.
Does the machine need a clear path to the stump?
Yes. A stump grinder is driven to the stump, so it has to fit through whatever stands between the street and the work: a gate, a side yard, a slope, soft or wet ground. Measure the narrowest gate on that route before you call. It is the single most useful number you can have ready.
What affects the price?
Size is the obvious one, and it is the width at ground level that matters rather than how tall the tree was. After that: how many stumps, how tight they sit against a fence, wall, or driveway, how far the machine has to travel, how much root flare is showing, and whether the ground is full of rock or old fill that is hard on teeth. Pricing is quoted for your job rather than read off a table.
How deep does grinding go?
Depth is a decision rather than a fixed number, and it should match your plan for the space. Grass needs less than a fence post or a new tree in the same spot. Say what you intend to do there and ask for the depth that suits it, so you are both working to the same picture.
What happens to the grindings and the hole?
Grinding produces a mound of chips and soil, usually more than people expect. Ask directly what will happen to it: raked level and left in place, mounded over the hole to settle, or hauled off. Ask the same about chips that spread past the work area. Settling that on the phone means the yard looks the way you expect when the machine leaves.
Will the roots be gone for good?
Grinding takes out the stump and the root flare you can see. Roots running out under the yard stay where they are and break down over time, and some species send up suckers from them afterwards. Anyone who tells you every root is gone is overselling it.
What about utilities near the stump?
Sunshine 811 is Florida’s free call-before-you-dig service, and it marks public utility lines. It does not cover private ones, so mention anything you know of that runs on your side of the meter: irrigation, septic, invisible fence, low-voltage lighting, a line out to a shed or a well.
